Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Natural Home Treatment

By Dr. Jonathan V. Wright

In many cases, carpel tunnel syndrome is thought to be caused by making the same motions with the hands and wrists over and over again. For this reason, some have re-named the problem "repetitive motion syndrome". Though repetitive motion very often appears to be a culprit, it doesn't explain the frequent occurrence of the carpel tunnel syndrome along with other non-motion related conditions, such as pregnancy.

"Mainstream" medical treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome includes splinting, rest, anti-inflammatory drugs, and quite frequently surgery to cut the ligament over the "carpel tunnel". Cutting this ligament relieves pressure, and eliminates the symptoms of the problem.

Nutritional and natural therapies can often help eliminate carpel tunnel syndrome for the large majority of individuals. In the minority of instances when they don't help, surgery can still be done.

Vitamin B6 is the mainstay of natural treatment of carpel tunnel syndrome. I usually recommend 200 milligrams of vitamin B6, three times daily, to start, along with a multiple B-vitamin formulation with at least 50 milligrams of each of the major B vitamins, also three 6m daily. Usually, carpel tunnel symptoms will recede in three to five months, and the vitamin B6 and B complex can be tapered down to a much lower quantity.

Vitamin B6 needs to be transformed by our bodies to 'pyridoxal phosphate' in order to become active. Some individuals with carpel tunnel syndrome who don't respond to 'plain' vitamin B6 do well on pyridoxal phosphate instead. When 'plain' vitamin B6 has not done the job, I recommend pyridoxal phosphate 50 milligrams three times daily, and, once again, to be taken with a multiple B-complex formulation.

Occasionally, when neither swallowing 'plain' vitamin B6 or pyridoxal phosphate relieves symptoms, I'll recommend a trial of vitamin B6 by injection, 100 milligrams every other day, along with 1 cc. of B-complex, 1000 micrograms of vitamin B12 and 5 milligrams of folic acid. Sometimes this does the job when swallowing vitamin B6 or pyridoxal phosphate doesn't.

In a small minority of individuals, swallowing or injecting the various types of vitamin B6 doesn't relieve carpal tunnel symptoms. Before referring these individuals on for surgery, I'll recommend they try rubbing a mixture of DMSO and the injectable forms of vitamin B6, B-complex, vitamin B12, and folic acid directly over the affected carpel tunnel area. DMSO "carries" the various B vitamins directly into the affected tissue, as well as having activity on it's own. I usually recommend this approach to be tried for two to three months.

Because of differences in age, sex, metabolism, or allergy, these diet and supplement therapies may not be suitable for you. Consult a health care professional skilled in nutritional and natural therapies.
