A Self-Help Guide For Natural Cures

Hypothyroid Natural Treatment

Hypothyroidism is the underproduction of the thyroid hormone.  This is a very common condition.  Symptoms include fatigue, loss of appetite, overweight, painful prementstrual periods, muscle weakness, dry and scaly skin, a yellow-orange coloration in the skin (particularly on the palms), yellow bumps on the eyelids, hair loss ( including eyebrows), recurrent infections, constipation, depression, slow speech, and myxedema (drooping, swollen eyes).  the most frequent symptoms seen in those suffering from this disorder are intolerance to cold and fatigue.  if a person is cold while others around him are hot, he is suffering from reduced thyroid function.

A condition called Hashimoto's disease is sometimes the cause of an underactive thyroid.  In this disease, the body becomes allergic to the thyroid hormone.  By measuring the hormone levels in the blood, it can usually be determined if the thyroid gland is working properly.

Problems with the thyroid can be the cause of many recurring illnesses and fatigue.

Thyroid Self-Test

To test yourself for an underactive thyroid, keep a thermometer by your bed one night.  When you awake the next morning, place the thermometer under your arm and hold it there for fifteen minutes.  Keep still and quiet.  Any motion can upset your temperature reading.  A temperature of 97.6 F or lower may indicate an underactive thyroid.  Keep a log!  If your readings are in this category, see your doctor.

Treatment of a regular morning temperature of 96 F is three to four grains of Armour Thyroid Extract (by prescription).  A person with a regular morning temperature of 97 F should take one to two grains.  If you have side effects, speak to your physician about reducing the dosage.
