A Self-Help Guide For Natural Remedies

DDT Poisoning

When DDT was first introduced as an insecticide in 1939, it was hoped that it would protect the farmer's crops from invading insects.  Although the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) banned its use n December of 1972, the toxic insecticide DDT remains a threat due to its' long-lasting effects on the environment.   Studies revealed that a high concentration of DDT is found in the fatty tissues of some species, particularly in those that are further along in the food chain.  For example, birds will have a higher concentration of DDT than fish because they will acquire DDT not only from the fish they have consumed, but also from the microorganisms and algae eaten by the fish and so on.  DDT was thus shown to be a cumulative poison that is stored primarily in the fatty tissues of the body.

Although the United States has outlawed the use of DDT by American farmers on crops produced in this country, there are no such controls on foreign imports or exports.  Many of the crops grown in Israel, including those sprayed with DDT, cannot be consumed by the Jewish population because the chemicals used on the produce prevent it from being certified as kosher.  Although the Israeli Jews cannot eat these foods, Israel does sell such produce to the United States.

Even though DDT was banned over ten years ago, it has found its way back into our foods.  It has been a by-product in pesticides used mainly on citrus fruits and cotton.  A DDT by-product called dicofol has been used in pesticides, including the name brands Kelthane, Mitigan, and Acarin.  In October 1984 the EPA proposed a total ban on the substance.

Because fat supplies will be used by the body when a person is dieting, a crash diet can be harmful if toxic amount of DDT are released from the fat stores into the bloodstream too quickly.  Because the body is unable to rid itself of this poison, severe damage could result.  If you choose to fast, do so only on fresh juices.   Never fast on water alone.
